For those with Fish concerning power outages.

Most fish can't breathe air through the surface it needs to pass through their gills. Some fish like betas, gold fish & guppy's can, due to their special lung. Those fish generally don't need an air pump or heater because they are so versatile (but having one is nice for the fish to make it less stressful for them)

For the rest of the Fish out there air needs to be put in the tank some how, when the power goes out. Larger tanks that are long have a lot of exposed surface area which allows more air to pass into the water. Conversely the taller narrow tanks have a cosmetic place in the market but less exposed surfaces area making it hard for air to pass in on its own potentially being a risk in emergency situations.
Obviously the lower the population of you tank, the less the air will get used up. Covering the sides of you tank can help keep your fish calm as people walk by causing them to move less and use less air.

Things to help:
1. Passive Air Exchange:
-Take the lid of the tank off to allow more air flow over the tank.
2. Active air Exchange:
-Take a bucket scoop water out and dump it back in to make the largest impact, to promote gas exchange.
-or blow air into the tank - this does not blow Oxygen in but doing this disturbs the surface of the water sucking in
    more oxygen.
3. Temperature:
    -if cold:
              Wrap tank in blankets
Poor heated water into jugs and float to keep tank warm
-if hot:   (and your fish need cooler water)
Place ice/water into jugs and float them in tank.

Items you should consider purchasing as alternatives to your low power non generator needs:
Example of a Power inverter

--Power Inverter:
Is a device that connects to your cigarette adapter in your car. Allowing you to plug in standard plugs, running off your battery. I used this deceive to save our exotic fish from suffocation. Using an extension cord to their air pump.

----Uninterrupted Power Supply: aka UPS.
Is a battery pack connected to a surge protector this is generally used for saving computer info in crashes, or as surge protection on vital machines. Great for fish tanks cause it can run a heater & air pump for a SIGNIFICANT amount of time.

Example of a Premeium high capacity UPS system

The large high capacity units come with a great Heads Up Display (HUD) which can show you a variety of info from Time left estimates, to battery charge level, to Draw on the system. These run about 150$ give or take. They also have good surge protection functions for sensitive equipment. These are always left on.

Example of a Standard UPS system

The Standard units are simple just a simple power button, that is enough for fish purposes generally. Plug it in leave it on, Id simply unplug all but the air pump and heater to extend the vital functions life. Filtration can wait or be done manually. These are cheap around 50$.

All of these devices can be found at local office supply stores that sell electronic equipment or online on sites like Amazon or newegg.com

-Back up battery for these are never a bad idea.
-Hope this helps!!!!
-BTW these devices can be used for other means ie like my Dad's CPAP Machine for his sleep apnea

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO BECAUSE I'd HATE TO SEE PEOPLE LOSE PETS BECAUSE THEY WERE AT A LOSS AS TO WHAT TO DO TO SAVE THEIR ANIMALS!

Since FB sucks at public shares, posting this here so friends and other might benefit from this
